Our Mission

Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo makes real the love of Christ Jesus and the Catholic Church by serving those, regardless of faith or background, with physical, emotional or spiritual needs; assisting the neglected and forgotten; respecting and promoting life from conception to natural death; and nurturing and supporting the institution of family.

We could use your help!

If you would like to volunteer now or would like us to contact you about volunteering, text the volunteer description, (for example “Pantry Volunteers”) to 419-318-7086 or email Catholic Charities Volunteer Coordinator Byron Wynn at bwynn@toledodiocese.org. We will make arrangements for you to complete the volunteer application process and background check. The results of the background check are usually available in five days.

If your group has an idea for a service activity or fundraiser, please contact us and we will work to accommodate your idea. If you would like to have a representative from Catholic Charities visit your group to describe our mission and services please email your request 21 days in advance to Byron Wynn, Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo’s Volunteer Coordinator, at bwynn@toledodiocese.org

The following Catholic Charities ministries need volunteers:

TOLEDO, OHIO

Administrative Services – Assist with answering phones and greeting guests at the Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo downtown office entrance located in the Diocese of Toledo’s Pastoral Center. Assist with filing or shredding paper Mondays and Wednesdays 12-3 p.m. A three-month commitment is preferred working in this office environment.

Helping Hands of St. Louis Outreach Center (East Toledo)
  • Data Entry Volunteer needed to enter program data on a computer on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to Noon.
  • Pantry Intake Volunteer greets and enters guest information into a computer and helps pantry guests on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to Noon.
  • Pantry Stock Volunteer rotates stock, helps stock pantry and manages food donations (lifting up to 50 lbs.) Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays from 9 a.m. to Noon or Noon to 3 p.m.
  • Greeter to welcome people and ensure COVID mask and hand-washing protocols are followed on Wednesdays from 9:15-11:30 a.m.
  • Cleaning Volunteers to clean and sanitize tables, walls, and floors. Clean walk-in cooler and bathrooms. To visit 2-3 times a week.
  • Neighborhood Cleanup (minimum group size 5-7 people) walk the neighborhood and pick up paper and cans. Need once in the Spring, Summer and Fall.
  • Painting Crew (5 people) trimming and painting.
  • Cooler Cleaning (3-5 people) lifting 5-25 lbs. wipe down and mop walk-in cooler/freezer.
  • Garden Volunteers weeding, mulching and plant care.
  • Clothing Center Volunteers will help with light lifting, sorting of clothing donations and helping guests make selections on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – Noon. Data entry on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – Noon.
  • Delivery Driver with good driving record to do pick-ups in van or box truck, available with 24+ hour notice.
  • Pantry Volunteers willing to lift 5-20 lbs. and help guests make grocery selections Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 a.m. – Noon.
  • Thanksgiving Angels, November 11 – November 26 help receive donations between 9 a.m. and Noon, or between Noon and 3 p.m., heavy lifting 15-35 lbs.
  • Christmas Angels, December 9 – December 20 help receive donations between 9 a. m. and 12 Noon, or between Noon and 3 p.m., heavy lifting 15-35 lbs.
La Posada Family Emergency Shelter (Near Broadway and Western)
  • Deep Cleaning – Responsibilities include washing windows, cleaning floors, and wiping  horizontal surfaces. Email to coordinate a time.
  • Enrichment – Responsibilities include reading stories, playing board games, and helping with student’s homework 3-4 p.m. during weekdays (one day a week for two months).
  • Virtual Story Readers – High school students have a meaningful opportunity to be virtual story-time readers. Student volunteers can create videos of stories read aloud and post it on a Facebook page or YouTube. Each story time reading is 15-20 minutes. We are looking for great readers who will be engaging for our young audience.
  • Virtual Tutors – High school students can become an online volunteer tutor with students K-12 in math, science, reading, and writing from wherever is most convenient and whenever is most convenient.
  • Chalk Sidewalk Project – High School students can create a sidewalk chalk design, share it with the children, and have them recreate the design on the sidewalk outside the shelter.
  • Garden Patrol – Visit once a week to weed and water our Community Garden during the spring and summer months.
  • Other needs – Make teddy bears for children. Make blankets. Blankets are a source of comfort and warmth and greatly needed for homeless families, sick children and animals in shelters.
Respect Life Ministries 

Sidewalk Prayer Vigil Volunteers are needed to pray for the lives of mothers and their unborn children facing abortion.

MANSFIELD, OHIO

Case Aide: Conduct interviews with clients who request prescription assistance.

Office Support: Assist with greeting visitors, answering the telephone, filing, copying, mailings, data entry utilizing Word, Excel and basic clerical duties in the office.

HOPE Pantry
  • Pantry Volunteers: Stocking and organizing shelves, cleaning the pantry, greeting guests and data entry using Pantry Trak tracking database. Must be ambulatory, able to bend, stretch and lift 50 lbs.
  • Delivery driver: Donated food items need to be picked up from local churches, schools and businesses. Volunteers will pick up the food and bring it back to our food pantry. Must be ambulatory, able to bend, stretch and lift 50 lbs.

Instructor, Financial Literacy Workshops:  Includes basic household and financial management techniques, as well as useful information regarding the resources available throughout the community.  For the Workshop we are seeking individuals to assist our instructor with preparations for the class and to help out during the Workshop sessions.

Volunteer GuardianAdvocate for individuals 55 and older who are not able to do so for themselves. Medical, social service, or other non-profit experience is helpful.

NORWALK, OHIO

Office Support: Assist with answering the telephone, filing, copying, mailings, data entry utilizing Word, Excel, and basic clerical duties in the office.

Volunteer GuardianAdvocate for individuals 55 and older who are not able to do so for themselves. Medical, social service, or other non-profit experience is helpful.

Miriam House: Organize a donation drive for items on the Shelter’s Wish List.

SANDUSKY, OHIO

Furniture Ministry

  • Furniture Ministry Pick Up/Delivery:Our Furniture Ministry is volunteer-based and supported by furniture donations from the community. Items need to be picked up from donors and brought to the storage unit. Must be ambulatory and able to bend, stretch and lift 50 lbs.
  • Furniture Ministry Inventory Management: Includes recording items as they are donated/distributed, cleaning/sorting donated items and maintaining the storage unit.

Volunteer GuardianAdvocate for individuals 55 and older who are not able to do so for themselves. Medical, social service, or other non-profit experience is helpful.
