Then Sr. Norma Seni Pimentel, with the Missionaries of Jesus and Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley shares the emerging needs in the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville, Texas and her work providing humanitarian relief to immigrants on the U.S. - Mexico border. The Humanitarian Respite Center she launched in 2014 to respond to the immediate needs of unaccompanied children and migrants needing a place to rest and regain strength has been lauded by Pope Francis and many organizations across the country and around the world.
In April 2023, Sister Norma was awarded the Spirit of Francis Award by Catholic Extensions in Rome, Italy for her humanitarian efforts in the Rio Grande Valley. Recently, Pope Francis also sent her a video message encouraging her and all volunteers to continue their work and efforts along the U.S. - Mexico border.
