Since 1995 the diocesan Bereavement Action Committee has planned programs to help parishes develop, enhance or expand their respective bereavement ministry as they strive to meet the needs of the bereaved in their communities. The committee currently consists of volunteers from various parishes, a retired hospice staff member and a funeral director.
The Bereavement Action Committee initially held an annual bereavement retreat for those grieving the loss of someone significant in their lives. Since then the committee has provided parish/school closing intervention sessions, retreats, gatherings for bereavement ministers, Holidays and Everdays program workshops, grief workshops at Richland Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio and co-sponsored a Professional Bereavement Networking Fair with local funeral homes.
Most recently the committee members have developed a Ministry of Consolation Handbook for parish utilization.
Certification is also available in Bereavement Ministry with the application process originating through the diocesan Office of Lay Formation.
