Disaster Response March, 2012

Catholic Charities Prepares to Respond to Tornado Damage
Coordination is underway with Catholic Charities agencies in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma
Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) and its agencies in impacted areas have taken immediate steps to respond to the aftermath of last weekend’s tornadoes in Wichita and Salina, Kansas; Thurman and Creston, Iowa; Lincoln, Nebraska; Norman and Woodward, Oklahoma.
“We are coordinating with our agencies to ensure that they have the support they need,” said Rev. Larry Snyder, President of CCUSA.  “We pray for those impacted by these sudden and devastating storms; as always, we stand ready to assist during immediate and long-term recovery efforts.”
CCUSA, among the nation’s largest human services organizations, has provided nationwide disaster response services for decades.  Its work to reduce poverty in America is among the most acknowledged in the country.

Religious Freedom

Bishop Leonard Blair at the March 23rd Rally for Religious Freedom

This is to clarify any confusion on the HHS Mandate, between the position of Catholic Charities Diocese of  Toledo and Catholic Charities USA. Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo is in complete agreement and support of Bishop Leonard Blair and the USCCB position on the HHS Mandate.
The following is CCUSA’s most recent statement (2/15/ 2012):

“In response to a great number of mischaracterizations in the media, Catholic Charities USA wants to make two things very clear:
1. We have not endorsed the accommodation to the HHS mandate that was announced by the Administration last Friday.
2. We unequivocally share the goal of the US Catholic bishops to uphold religious liberty and will continue to work with the USCCB towards that goal.
Any representation to the contrary is false.”

Stories of Hope

Helping the Vulnerable

In Norwalk, Catholic Charities, staff intervene on behalf of the vulnerable.

The 55-year-old man had always lived with his mother, who took care of him. When she was admitted into a local nursing home, he lapsed into a marginal existence. He was frequently exploited by neighbors who invited him to buy beer and drink with them.

Catholic Charities was able to provide him with financial education to help him make better decisions. He was placed in an apartment at another location and teamed with a local support group for ongoing contacts to help him avoid similar problems in the future.
